Huanggang Port: The Busy Gateway Between Two Cities
Huanggang Port is a busy 24-hour land crossing between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, where people and vehicles pass through with travel documents. It is being rebuilt to become bigger and faster, with a new system that lets you stop only once for both sides' checks.

Imagine standing on a bridge that stretches across a river. On one side is the busy city of Shenzhen in mainland China, with tall buildings and bright lights. On the other side is Hong Kong, with its own skyscrapers and mountains. Every day, thousands of people and vehicles cross this bridge. They are going through a very special place called Huanggang Port.
Huanggang Port is one of the busiest land crossings between mainland China and Hong Kong. It opened in 1989, and since then, it has helped connect the two places. Think of it like a giant gate that lets people, cars, and trucks pass from one side to the other. It is open 24 hours a day, so you can cross even in the middle of the night! The port is in Shenzhen's Futian District, and on the Hong Kong side, it connects to a place called Lok Ma Chau.
What happens when you cross the border?
When you go through Huanggang Port, you have to show your travel documents, like a passport or a special permit. This is to make sure everyone is allowed to cross. There are two main parts of the port: one for people walking and one for vehicles like cars and trucks. For people, there are many lanes where officers check your documents. Some lanes are for regular checks, and some are for machines that can do it quickly—these are called "e-channels" or "self-service gates." They scan your face and your document, and if everything matches, the gate opens! It is very fast, like a robot helping you through.
Vehicles also have their own lanes. Trucks carrying goods, like food or toys, go through special areas where officers check what is inside. Cars and buses take different lanes. Because so many people use this port every day—sometimes over 100,000 people—the workers have to be very organized. It is like a busy airport, but for crossing a border on land.
Why is Huanggang Port being rebuilt?
Huanggang Port has been used for many years, and it is getting old. The buildings need to be updated so they can handle even more people in the future. Starting in 2020, workers began to tear down the old buildings and build new ones. The new port will be much bigger and more modern. It will have nine floors—five above ground and four underground! There will be space for trains, too, so you might be able to take a train directly to the border one day.
The new port will also use a special system called "cooperative inspection, one-time clearance." This means you only need to stop once to go through both Chinese and Hong Kong checks. It will make crossing even faster. The new port is expected to be ready in 2026. Until then, a temporary building is being used so people can still cross the border.
How does the port help people?
Huanggang Port is like a big, friendly door between two cities. It helps families who live on one side and work or go to school on the other. It helps tourists visit both places. It also helps trucks bring things we use every day, like fresh fruit, clothes, and electronics, from one place to the other. Without this port, it would be much harder for people and goods to move between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
