Robocon is a competition where teams of university students from different countries build their own robots. Each year, the contest has a new theme. One year, the robots might need to build a tower. They also have to work together as a team, just like in a real engineering company.
The contest started in the year 2002. It is organised by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), a group of TV and radio stations from many countries. The first contest was held in Japan. Since then, different countries have taken turns to be the host. Teams from places like China, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, and many others compete. The robots are not remote-controlled. They must think for themselves using their programming.
How do the robots know what to do?
The robots use sensors to see the world around them. A sensor is like a robot's eye or ear. Some sensors can tell how far away a wall is. Others can detect the colour of a line on the floor. The students write computer programs that tell the robot what to do when it sees these things. For example, if a sensor sees a red line, the robot might turn left. If it sees a blue line, it might stop. The robot's brain is a small computer called a microcontroller. It processes the information from the sensors and sends commands to the motors that make the robot move.
What happens on the day of the contest?
The contest day is very exciting. Each team brings their robot to a special arena, which is like a big playground for robots. The arena has walls, ramps, and markings on the floor. Two teams compete at a time. Their robots race to finish a task, like stacking blocks or shooting balls into goals. The team whose robot finishes the task first, or does it better, wins the match. The matches continue until one team becomes the champion. The winning team gets a trophy and the chance to show their robot on TV.
Why do students join Robocon?
Students join Robocon because it is fun and challenging. They learn how to solve problems, work under pressure, and fix things when they break. Many students say they learn more from Robocon than from their classes. They also make friends from other countries. Some students even get jobs at big robot companies after they graduate. Robocon is a way to turn a love for building things into real skills.
