What sports are played at the Asian Games?
There are many, many sports. Some you will know, like swimming, running, football, and basketball. Others are very special to Asia. Have you heard of kabaddi? It is a team sport from India where players try to tag the other team while holding their breath. Sepak takraw is like volleyball, but you use your feet and head, and the ball is made of rattan. Wushu is a Chinese martial art that looks like a beautiful, fast dance. The Games also have modern sports like esports (video game competitions) and breakdancing. In 2022, the Games in Hangzhou, China, had 40 different sports. That is a lot to watch!
How did the Asian Games start?
A long time ago, in 1951, the first Asian Games were held in New Delhi, India. Before that, there was a smaller event called the Far Eastern Games. After World War II, leaders from different Asian countries wanted a bigger, better competition for all of Asia. So they created the Asian Games. The motto of the Games is "Ever Onward," which means always moving forward and trying your best. The Games have grown a lot. The first Games had only 11 countries. Now, 45 countries and regions take part. Hong Kong has been sending teams for many years, and in the last Games, Hong Kong athletes won a record number of medals.
Where do the Asian Games happen?
Different cities in Asia take turns being the host. The host city builds new stadiums, swimming pools, and a special village where all the athletes live. The next Games will be in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, in 2026. After that, the Games will go to Doha, Qatar, in 2030. The host city gets to show off its culture and food to the whole continent. Imagine athletes from 45 places all eating dim sum in Hong Kong—that is the kind of fun exchange the Games create.
