The BWF World Championships: The Biggest Badminton Tournament on Earth
The BWF World Championships is the biggest badminton tournament in the world, held every year except Olympic years. Players from around the globe compete in five events for gold medals and the title of World Champion.

Imagine a stadium packed with thousands of people. The air is so still you can hear the shuttlecock — that's the feathered thing players hit — as it *thwack*s off a racket. On one side of the net, a player from China crouches low, eyes locked on the birdie. On the other side, a player from Denmark waits, bouncing lightly on their toes. In just a few seconds, one of them will become a world champion. This is the BWF World Championships, the biggest badminton tournament on the planet.
What happens at the World Championships?
Five different contests happen at the same tournament: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles (one man and one woman on each side). Players don't represent a team — they play for themselves, but the country they come from gets to celebrate their win. The winner of each contest gets a gold medal and the title "World Champion." The runner-up gets silver, and the two players or pairs who lose in the semi-finals each get a bronze medal. No one goes home empty-handed.
How did the tournament start?
Back in 1977, the first World Championships were held in Malmö, Sweden. At first, the tournament only happened once every three years, which meant a long wait for fans. Then, from 1985, it switched to every two years. Since 2006, it has been held every year — except in years when the Summer Olympics take place. That's because the Olympics are the other huge badminton event, and the World Championships steps aside so players can focus on the Games. The only exception was 2021, when the Olympics were delayed by a year, so both events happened in the same year.
Who wins the most?
China has been the strongest country in the tournament's history. In most years, Chinese players have won more gold medals than anyone else. But other countries have had their golden moments too. Denmark won big in the early years. Indonesia has been a powerhouse, especially in men's doubles. Japan rose to the top in 2019 and 2021, winning two golds each time. South Korea also surprised everyone in 2023 by winning three golds — the most of any country that year. The tournament moves around the world too. It has been held in Europe, Asia, and even North America (Anaheim, USA, in 2005).
What makes it so special?
Unlike many other sports, badminton at the World Championships is a knockout tournament from the very first match. Lose one game, and you're out. That means every point matters. Players train for years to get here, and the world rankings decide who gets to enter. Only the best 64 players in men's singles, and 48 pairs in the other events, can compete. The pressure is huge, but so is the reward: the gold medal and the right to call yourself the best in the world.
